What is the Function of an Ethernet Controller on a Computer Network?

For computer users, the Ethernet controller is certainly familiar. Ethernet or also known as a network controller is a device that functions to connect computers to a network. The network to be connected usually uses a certain interface, either in the form of a LAN cable or it can also use wireless.

In its use, the network controller is indeed a problem that usually occurs in computer users. Not only computer devices consisting of CPU, monitor, keyboard, and mouse that usually experience problems on this network.

Personal computers such as laptops or netbooks also often experience network problems. However, the personal computer will usually be given a CD or DVD containing the drivers or software utilities required by the operating system on the personal computer.

Understanding and History of Ethernet or Network Controller

In its understanding, Ethernet or network controller has their respective meanings. Ethernet itself can be interpreted as part of the network technology on the computer. That is why, Ethernet is also often called a network or network.

Usually this Ethernet applies to a local area network or better known as a LAN (Local Area Network). So, from the understanding that has been explained, Ethernet can be concluded as an internet network that is commonly used in a small area or area.

As a part of the network, Ethernet or network controller can also be called a computer network device. This is because the Ethernet controller is used to connect the computer to the internet network in its environment.

As a device, of course Ethernet or this network has several problems that occur on the computer. This would be something that must be known as a step to recognize and better understand the performance of the network controller on the computer.

In its development, Ethernet was first introduced by Robert Metcalfe from ALOHAnet. The idea of Robert Metcalfe was later redeveloped by Xerox PARC which was originally only written in Robert Metcalfe's notes on May 22, 1973. At that time, Robert Metcalfe, who first discovered it, did not expect that his invention would be used today.

Then in 1975, Xerox, who knew Robert Metcalfe's thoughts and developed Metcalfe's thoughts, asked to patent the development and also include Metcalfe as its original inventor. At that time, Xerox was also assisted by David Boggs, Butler Lampson, and Chuck Thacker, so that the invention was patented by them together.

Until 1979, Robert Metcalfe who first discovered Ethernet decided to leave Xerox and form 3Com. By forming 3Com, Robert Metcalfe tried to convince Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Xerox, and Intel to unite and work together to promote and introduce to the world the use of Ethernet as a basic computer device. From there, the standard DIX was born, which stands for Digital, Intel, Xerox.

With the joining of the three software developers, on September 30, 1980, The Ethernet, A Local Area Network, was launched. Data Link Layer and Physical Layer Specifications. The first Ethernet product was later developed into a second version in 1982, two years after Ethernet was first introduced to the general public.

In 1982, the development of Ethernet discovered by Robert Metcalfe was then made in the form of an adapter card designed for IBM personal computers. At that time, the Ethernet adapter card was produced and distributed by the company directly developed by Robert Metcalfe in 1985, namely 3Com. Since then, the need for an Ethernet controller has evolved and has filled the market among computer users worldwide.

Ethernet Function and Types of Cards on the Network

ethernet

As previously explained, Ethernet is a device for a computer network. This device was developed by Robert Metcalfe who certainly had a vision in developing computer technology at that time.

Ethernet was not created solely to support the development of computers. Ethernet has a function in which it plays an important role in computer activities to date.

When viewed from the understanding, Ethernet itself is a hardware or physical technology device that contains a data link layer for a local area network. This Ethernet supports theoretical data rates that can reach 10 megabits per second (Mbps). Until now, the speed capability possessed by Ethernet can reach 1,000 Mbps.

In its use, network protocols with high-level capabilities, such as the Internet Protocol or IP, usually use Ethernet as a transmission medium which is the way the network is connected properly. Data that is sent over a transmission medium via the Ethernet protocol is known as a frame. This frame sends data via network protocol transmission which will continue to be connected.

If in digital form this transmission medium is known as the Ethernet protocol, but in its physical form this transmission is in the form of an Ethernet cable. This Ethernet cable is usually quite limited. The maximum use of this Ethernet cable can reach 100 meters. This is because the type of network used by Ethernet is a LAN or Local Area Network.

That is, the network that can be reached by this Ethernet controller is only limited to a small area or local area. Even so, if users want to expand their network, it is enough to use a network of bridge devices. This bridge device can connect a wider area, such as a network between buildings, networks between schools, offices, or others.

In its development, Ethernet is made in the form of cards known as adapters. This Ethernet adapter or card is a device that supports Ethernet standards with a higher network connection by using a cable as the transmission.

This Ethernet card is also known as a Network Interface Card or in Indonesian known as a NIC or network interface card. This Ethernet card is available in several standard packages commonly used for computer networks. These Ethernet card packages have different forms and functions.

The following are forms of Ethernet card packages that are commonly found on computer networks, such as:

1. ISA Card

Was the first Ethernet network card that required the computer to be opened and reinstalled.

2. PCI

Is an extension of the ISA Card. Usually this PCI card has been installed by the computer manufacturer and can be easily installed via a computer desktop.

3. Ethernet PCMCIA Card

This is a small Ethernet card shaped like a SIM card. Usually this Ethernet card is used for laptops, tablets, car computers, and so on.

4. External USB Ethernet adapter

The latest development of Ethernet cards that are shaped like small boxes commonly used for desktop computers. This type of Ethernet card package is an alternative choice and is often used for video game consoles. In addition to having good capabilities, this type of Ethernet card package can be easily installed on any computer device, whether it is a desktop computer, laptop or tablet.

That's the information about the Ethernet controller that can be conveyed. Hope it is useful.
