What Submersible Cables are and When to Use Them?

As you know, submersible pumps are used in wells or dewatering tanks and are necessary to provide our cities with an adequate supply of drinking water. To enable them to operate, they need electricity as well.

Some pumps operate in depths of water greater than 500 meters. Hence, special cables are constructed to handle pressures and abrasions associated with deep waters. These cords are termed as submersible cables.

Running electricity underwater must be planned out and done carefully to make it work, avoiding consequential hazards. Not any heavy duty electrical cable will do.

Therefore, special submersible cables must be built by manufacturers who construct them carefully making the cables resistant to pressures and abrasions typically found in deep water environments. When used, these cables must resist any chemicals containing greases or oils.

Various forms of submersible pumps have different types of electrical demands and thus require distinct styles of wiring to make them work. For example, pumps used in dewatering tanks or sewer systems are supplied electricity through PVC 3 core and PVC 4 cord submersible cables.

These cords must remain unaffected by conditions such as various types of abrasions, acidic fluids, and all forms of toxic chemicals. Likewise, pumps placed in water tanks that are 500 meters deep are powered with Rubber 3 core and Rubber 4 core flat model cords.

All of these submersible cables contain an outer layer of thermoplastic rubber made to withstand oil and water as well as an inner layer specially made to protect the cable’s inner core. Most of all these cables can handle the stress caused by fluctuations in water levels.

Not only must submersible cables resist stressful water pressures and toxic chemicals, but must also withstand abrasion while supplying adequate power to pumps. Both flat and round versions of wires can resist cuts or tears caused by various types of abrasions they encounter while in use.

Either type is resistant to any weather condition as well as most any type of impact. Cables of both PVC and rubber protected cables can conduct 600 volts of electricity. Round type cables are better for some pumps while flat types are better for others. Rubber cables are more suitable for pumps deeply submerged in saltwater.

Pumps used to supply our drinking water consist of submersible cables that are built differently from most other types of cables used underwater. What separates these cables from the others is the fact they are built with non-poisonous materials but still possess the appearance of cables designed with vulcanized rubber.

Such cables contain an outer EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) outer coating making them waterproof plus a layer of sheathing, also made of EPDM protecting it from any type of abrasions it may come in contact with.
