Latina Names - Scientific Names of Plants

The controversy surrounding scientific names such as the Latin names of plants cannot be separated from the variety of living things that live on this earth. The diversity of living things must be identified as carefully as possible.

Scientists are trying to organize a systematic naming of living things so that they can be used globally. Various scientific names or Latin names ranging from the Latin names of plants to the Latin names of animals are arranged systematically and can be used by anyone.

Scientists around the world without hesitation and make mistakes in the process of classifying living things, especially plants. They did not hesitate to create Latin names for plants and Latin names for other living things.

Scientists initially had difficulty in unifying the proper names for certain living things. In Indonesia alone, this diversity can be seen clearly. For only one species, such as papaya, there are many Latin names for plants that identify the plant.

In Indonesian, the name papaya is commonly used. But not for West Java and Central Java. The name gedang, which means papaya, is used more often than its Indonesian equivalent. Based on the diversity of plants and the diversity of plant names, a clearer naming system is needed. The Latin name of the plant has also become a matter of discussion.

The systematics can use a scientific name whose rules have been mutually agreed upon. The scientific name generally uses Latin, so it is also called the Latin name of the plant. One of the well-known Latin names for plants is Oryza sativa (rice).

Rules of Scientific Names - Latin Names of Plants

Scientific naming, including the arrangement of the Latin names of plants, of course generally uses Latin. Naming using Latin is strongly influenced by the origin of the discovery. Carolus Linnaeus developed the standard rules for naming using Latin.

The process of systematically compiling Latin names, both plant and animal Latin names, has actually been done since ancient Greece. Carolus Linnaeus was only the first person to compile and publish the systematics of scientific writing.

Basically, the systematic writing of scientific names is divided into two, namely the scientific name (Latin name) of plants and Latin names of animals. The Latin name of the plant refers to the naming adapted to the kingdom of the plant itself. Plants belong to the plant kingdom. Scientific naming uses the rule of two names known as Binomial Nomenclature.

Binomial Nomenclature in the rules of naming Latin names for plants means naming using two words or names. The two words must consist of genus as the first word and species as the second word. The naming is derived from the most prominent characteristics that exist in these living things.

Those traits could mean the motif of the body or the place where he lived or the discoverer who was able to identify the species for the first time. The following rules are used to write scientific names (including the Latin names of plants).

Writing uses two words, the first word is used to identify the genus and the second word is used to give the name to the species.

The first word (genus) must be preceded by a capital letter, while it is okay if the second word is not preceded by a capital letter.

Both words must be italicized (when using computer media or a typewriter). In addition, the two words can be underlined to identify and distinguish the scientific name (the Latin name of the plant) from other sentences.

If the Latin name of the plant is in the title of the article or paper or other written work, the Latin name of the plant is not allowed to be written in full capital letters. The Latin name of the plant still uses the same rules which consist of two words, the first word is capitalized and the second word is not necessary, and italicized.

The name of the inventor or authority who holds the right to name may be inserted in the Latin name of the plant. The name of the discoverer or authority is placed at the back of the Latin name of the plant and is given in upright letters.

Additional information in the form of general information possessed by plants may be inserted. However, the addition must be placed in front of the plant's Latin name. The Latin name of the plant itself is bracketed. For example, Rice (Oryza sativa). The naming technique can be used to identify common names that apply in the community.

Naming species that have not been clearly identified is allowed as long as they follow the standard rules. The naming is done by adding the word species (sp.) at the end of the scientific name.

Division and Grouping of Latin Names of Plants

The Latin names of plants are grouped into several parts. The grouping of plants starts from the largest group, namely the kingdom. The grouping is continued in more specific sections (Divisio). The grouping is based on the characteristics inherent in the plant.

For example, if the plant lives and grows in the tropics, it is often named according to the place where it grows. Regrouping is reduced to a more specific direction, namely Class. Latin names of plants follow the class.

For more details, see the grouping scheme below:

  • Regnum
